Benedict Cumberbatch prefers yoga to drugs and is happy with ‘near-sobriety’

While the world of Hollywood and all it encapsulates has been linked with addictions in the past, it’s nice to know one star is adamant he’s avoided those pitfalls of fame. Benedict Cumberbatch: ‘near-sober’ and very happy. The actor was asked this week whether he’d ever been ‘addicted’ to anything and, perhaps surprising to some even admitted he isn’t that chuffed with a glass of wine. Even as a parent. Of young children. ‘But, no. I’ve had the opportunity; but even with that thing of having a glass of wine when the kids have gone to bed, I’m like, “I’m quite tired, and I don’t really fancy that glass of sugary alcohol”,’ the 41-year-old told Radio Times. I have the odd blow-out, now and again – a big birthday, or crazy weekend at a festival – but I prefer yoga and meditation.’ Ah yes, those vices – yoga and meditation. Even though we might want to, it’s hard to knock the guy – who has two children, Christopher and Hal, with wife Sophie Hunter – for fancying a little omm over a little chardonnay. It’s clear he hasn’t been doing any method acting as he plays herion addict Patrick Melrose in his new Sky Atlantic gig. ‘How it’s a slice of fiction pitched in that Trainspotting direction – and I remember when I saw Trainspotting I’d never taken any drugs, and people said it was glamorising them,’ he said of his thoughts towards his character. ‘… I thought, “What is glamorous about this? Do I want to wake up having nightmares in my parents’ bedroom, with babies crawling on the ceiling? Do I want my friend to be dying of Aids because of a dirty hypodermic?”
