Kangaroo Island resident yoga teacher Madhav Anand, formerly Matt Nettheim, will be re-commencing his Yoga for Men classes.

He has returned from India with his new name and additional teaching qualifications attained during his time at the Paramanand Ashram.

“I have been running these classes off and on over the last two years and they have attracted a diverse group of students of all ages, levels of fitness and yoga experience” Madhav said.

Trained in the tradition of Hatha yoga, these teaching’s go back over 5000 years, and are much more than just stretching exercises.

“Traditional yoga places a very big emphasis on the breath, teaches body awareness, discipline, mediation as well as powerful breathing practices called pranayamas,” he said.

“These ancient teachings have been absolutely transformative in all aspects of my life since I got into yoga six years ago, and now as a teacher, I love sharing them with others.

“I have experienced firsthand the many benefits of yoga practice on my students such as increased confidence, improved strength and flexibility and even stubborn old injuries and ailments getting slowly dissolved over time through regular practice.”

Madhav Anand is the Sanskrit yogi name given to him by his guru, or senior teacher, at the Paramanand Ashram he studied to be a yoga teacher at in Indore, India in both 2016 and 2018.

In an ancient naming ceremony for graduate students, his teacher encouraged the students to use their new name as much as possible, to even change their passports!

“I was a bit shy at first, it’s very foreign sounding and hard to pronounce, but I am starting to feel more comfortable with it, and it seems to bring me good luck when I do,” Madhav explained.

As well as working with adults, Madhav has been teaching the Island’s children at the Penneshaw and Kingscote KICE campuses.

“The kids really love the yoga classes, and I am frequently getting approached by my young students keen to demonstrate their progress with some of the challenging poses and tell me how much they enjoyed the classes, it’s very gratifying,” he said.

The men’s yoga classes are suitable for people who are completely fresh to yoga and all levels of fitness and flexibility.

“My lovely studio space in Baudin Beach allows me to take classes outside, and even on the beach if the weather is favorable”.
