Routine skin care during rough winter months

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – Cold and dry winters can be extremely rough on your skin.  Primary Care, Nurse Practitioner, Tonia Daniels, said skincare is important year round, but especially during the winter months.

“It dehydrates the moisture, your own skin makes, so once you turn the heat on your skin instantly starts to become dry,” Daniels said.

Daniels added that the best way to make up for the loss of moisture is by periodically applying lotions to the body.

“Using products that have emollient ingredients, creams, oil or ointment based products will create a barrier and help trap some moisture,” Daniels said.

Daniels explains that buying a small home humidifier can be useful as well. Along with taking luke-warm showers, because hot showers can make your skin even more dry. Anything you can do to protect one of the most important parts of your body.

“Your skin is the biggest organ of your entire body, so it does reflect your health, and eczema could happen that could cause the barrier to break down, which could cause skin infections,” Daniels said.

Daniels added drinking a lot of water also helps hydrate your skin. If you still are having problems she said visit your local dermatologist.
