An 8-year-old girl battling a rare form of breast cancer had a mastectomy yesterday in an effort to completely wipe out her cancer.

Chrissy Turner was diagnosed with secretory breast carcinoma last month. The cancer is extremely rare and accounts for less than 1 percent of all breast cancer cases, according to a report in the Pediatric Surgery International Journal.

Yesterday Chrissy underwent a mastectomy and had lymph nodes removed to treat the cancer, just weeks after her diagnosis, according to Chrissy’s mother Annette Turner.

“She’s doing pretty good, pain managing right now. She has a little bit more pain than yesterday,” Turner told ABC News.

While Chrissy will be under close watch over the next few years, Turner said the family is hopeful she won’t have to go through other grueling treatments such as radiation. She will can choose breast reconstruction when she reaches puberty.

“She’s been really brave and this is a big person’s surgery for such a little girl,” said Tuner. “She’s been through a lot.”
